FAQS

Q: How often should I brush and floss?

You should brush and floss everyday. Flossing at least once a day and brushing with a soft toothbrush twice a day.  We recommend brushing every morning and every night before bedtime for 2 minutes.

Q: How often should I have a dental exam and cleaning?

It is recommended that a dental exam and cleaning should be done at least every 6 months. Some patients require cleaning more often. This all depends on the patients oral hygiene, risks to cavities and gum disease.

Q: What can I expect at my first appointment?

At your first appointment we do a complete and thorough exam that includes bitewing x-rays and a panoramic x-ray to access tooth decay and the condition of wisdom teeth. We also look in the mouth at the teeth and gums to evaluate for gum disease and tooth decay. By doing this we gather the information needed to educate you about the condition of your mouth and form the best plan of action to maintain a healthy mouth. Your treatment plan will be designed to meet your specific wants and needs.

Q: Are amalgam (silver) fillings safe?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), American Dental Association (ADA) and other organizations have conducted numerous studies over several decades and have repeatedly found that the small amount of mercury released during placement and removal of amalgam fillings does not cause adverse health effects.

Q: HOW SAFE ARE DENTAL X-RAYS?

Dental x-rays are very safe.  While we do our best to limit the amount of radiation our patients are exposed to while in our office, there are many benefits to taking yearly x-rays. X-ray films allow us to see inside and between teeth to check for cavities, as well as the supporting bone and tips of tooth roots to check for bone loss, abscesses and other abnormalities. While every situation is unique they are the best tool we have to find problems at an early stage.
